A Jubilant Christmas Tradition

May your days be merry and bright. An iconic orange and gold aesthetic sets the tone for the holiday season.

‘Tis the season. Magical mood building for the holidays is best done with a little extra helping of POSH place settings. From Ginori to Mottahedeh and Lenox to Caskata, it is the unexpected accent pieces that breathe new life into your nostalgic holiday themes.

Setting the table for Christmas is one of our favorite holiday rituals. Rooted in the tradition of celebrating the warmth of an abundant tablescape surrounded by loved ones, this sacred season calls for bringing our best to the table–spiritually, metaphorically, and literally. Heritage collections, antique accents, and Grandmother’s china all have a special place place at the table. To add our twist on tradition, we like to pull in a new charger that really stands out as a joyful attraction. Enter the Mottahedeh Sacred Bird Charger.

THE PRIZED PATTERN

The Mottahedeh Sacred Bird Charger leads as the main attraction with her marriage of shape and design, showcasing a sophisticated motif of traditional birds, butterflies, and flowers. Orange and gold create a jubilant feel, making this beautiful design perfect for the Christmas season. And like any Queen, her true gift is the ability to hold court so that each specially curated piece in this nearly monochromatic tablescape has an opportunity to shine.

BUILD DEPTH ON THE TABLE

To accentuate the Sacred Bird throughout a coursed meal, we added stunning gold and glass couture pieces. We love how Kim Seybert Laurel Charger halos the beautiful artwork of the charger while the Arte Italica 24K Vetro Dinner Plate allows for a clear view of her intricate design. This heavenly glow is further accentuated by a mix of Etched Amber Glassware and Yellow Duchess Goblet, along with the Gold and Clear Lucite Flatware.

Also to note, we find that texture in the most high-touch places (chairs, linens) is a great way to encourage guests to feel at home at the table, no matter how “fancy” the tablescape may appear. This place setting is a properly suited, highly sophisticated aesthetic that feels instantly at ease for a wonderfully long dinner thanks to a Rattan Chair and Sedona Jute Linen. The slightly deeper tones add just the right amount of warmth and comfort, letting everyone know they can linger just a little longer.

HAVE A LITTLE FUN

Christmas calls for both a nod to the sacred as well as ornamental moments of spirited release. So now that we have a proper place setting, where can we add in a little personality? No need to complicate things. Simply layer in the Lenox Remix Accent Plates–perfect for passing the canapes or serving a seasonal salad. This festive set comes in four cheery colors to further add a cotton candy Christmas tone to your holiday table.

THE DIY: ADD A POSH POMANDER

The symbolic tradition of adding oranges and cloves to Christmas place settings goes all the way to the history of Jolly St. Nicholas and “The Night Before Christmas” where oranges worked as the currency of choice. During the Depression, oranges became an exotic, sought-after fruit. The luxury of having this sweet nectar made them a haute commodity for Christmas stockings and tables.

Also to note, oranges and cloves are natural flue fighters. Together, the duo is known as a pomander, and its unmistakable spicy, citrus aroma is known to instantly create a holiday atmosphere (plus work as sustainable compositions as a decoration). These are the perfect craft for littles or a meditative moment for a DIY project.

Simply wash and dry your oranges, poke cloves into the orange skin (a toothpick can help), and place them in a paper bag to dry out for a week or two. You’ll want to check that they aren’t molding. Once they are lightweight and make a hollow sound when tapping, they are ready to set out as decoration. We set ours out on the table, which would look perfect with this Sacred Bird Christmas Table. Enjoy!
