The Moscow Mule is on a continuous rise in the craft cocktail game and it doesn’t seem to be diminishing anytime soon. With the increase in popularity of the drink also comes the rise in popularity of its infamous partner, the copper mug. The copper mug is key in perfecting the Moscow Mule. Not only does the copper mug distinguish the drink from all others when in hand, but it also is important to the temperature and taste of the drink. The copper transmits the cold to the hands and the lips better than any glass can and amplifies the taste of the ginger and lime combination. Those reasons alone are proof enough to use a real copper mug when making the Moscow Mule.
We love these little cups so much that we now stock them here at P.O.S.H. Couture Rentals. Our mugs are 14 oz., short, solid copper plating with stainless steel base, smooth finish and are true copper mugs that are plated with copper on the exterior and interior. Our best advice, don’t get caught with a fake copper mug because your Moscow Mule just won’t be the same and who would want that, right?
How to Spot a Fake Copper Mug
There are a few ways to spot a fake. The first is whether or not the exterior of the mug is shiny and mirror-like compared to polished. A fake mug will be copper plated and therefore appear to be very shiny, whereas a real mug will have an orange appearance and not as reflective. Copper plating may seem great to start with, but eventually it begins to wear thin and can become patchy. The second indicator is whether or not it is magnetic. Real copper is not a magnetic metal so it will not attract a magnet. Third is the price, a real copper mug should cost anywhere from $25-$60 apiece anything less than that should indicate that the mug is a fake.
Lastly, while some copper mugs appear to be copper throughout, they are not. A lot of copper mugs do not have a copper exterior, as well as, a copper interior. Quite a few manufacturers are making copper mugs with stainless steel interiors and the whole point of the copper mug for the Moscow Mule is that the copper amplifies the taste of the drink. Case in point, stainless steel inside just won’t do!
Now that you are fully versed with what a proper copper mug is, we are confident you will be able to distinguish the real ones from the fake ones!
